Mike Powell World Record 30th Anniversary Celebration

Mon, August 30, 2021

Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Walnut, CA

Mt. SAC’s new, historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium hosts free community event

You’re invited to come celebrate the 30th anniversary of local hero Mike Powell‘s Long Jump World Record (8.95 meters / 29’4½”). The event will begin at 6:30pm, on Monday, August 30, 2021, at Mt. SAC’s new world class and state-of-the-art facility, Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The celebration will be held exactly 30 years after Powell broke Bob Beamon‘s long standing World Record (8.90 meters / 29’2½”) at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The event is FREE and will be held on the Hilmer Lodge Stadium Field/Track, in front of the scoreboard. The celebration will be attended by a number of notable track & field personalities, local dignitaries and fans. At the conclusion of the celebration, attendees will be able to take a picture with Mike Powell.

Powell’s incredible World Record still stands today and is the third oldest men’s world record in track & field (athletics). The record is so dominant that only 9 men have ever come within a foot of his mark, with only 2 of those coming in the past decade. In addition, Powell has held this record longer than anyone in history, surpassing the great Jesse Owens who held the record for 25 years, from 1935-60.

The three-time Mt. SAC Relays long jump champion grew up locally in West Covina, attended Edgewood High School (West Covina) and competed at Mt. SAC as a prep, collegian (UC Irvine / UCLA) and as a world class athlete.

During his impressive career, the three-time Olympian soared over 8 meters (26’3”) in 14 seasons / years and captured a number of international medals and titles including:

  • Silver Medal – 1988 Seoul Olympics
  • Silver Medal – 1992 Barcelona Olympics
  • Gold Medal – 1991 Tokyo World Championships
  • Gold Medal – 1993 Stuttgart World Championships
  • Bronze Medal – 1995 Gothenburg World Championships
  • Gold Medal – 1994 St. Petersburg Goodwill Games
  • Silver Medal – 1990 Seattle Goodwill Games
