Dailey, Perez Highlight Fantastic Day 1 at 75th Mt. SAC XC Invite

Fast times produce keen Sweepstakes competition honors on a warm day at Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. – Chiara Dailey and Emmanuel Perez added to their already impressive prep legacies Friday at the 75th Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational presented by Nike.

Ethan Parcells and Ariella Llorens both earned the most significant wins of their respective careers with their Sweepstakes performances on the 2.93-mile layout.

And the Cathedral Catholic girls and St. Francis boys programs showcased strong depth to produce convincing Division 3-4-5 team Sweepstakes victories at Mt. San Antonio College.

Dailey, a sophomore at La Jolla High in California, elevated to the #4 all-time 10th-grade competitor at Mt. SAC by clocking 16 minutes, 52 seconds to repeat in the Division 3-4-5 girls team Sweepstakes race.

Dailey, the fastest sophomore in San Diego Section history at Mt. SAC, triumphed last season in 16:58 and built on a 5:09 opening mile to lead from wire-to-wire Friday in a commanding performance that matched the fastest first-day effort in meet history, equaling the 2012 mark achieved by Julia Maxwell of Ross Branson High in California.

South Pasadena standout Abigail Errington clocked 17:22 and fellow junior Maya DeBrouwer of La Canada took third in 17:49, as the top three athletes in the team Sweepstakes all represented Division 4.

Cathedral Catholic relied on a fourth-place effort from Lindsay Zimmer (18:15) and a fifth-place performance by Scarlett Martin (18:27) to capture a third consecutive team Sweepstakes crown with a 78-126 victory against South Pasadena.

Palos Verdes was third with 128 points and La Jolla relied on Dailey and an eighth-place effort from Kirra Fisk (18:36) to secure fourth at 144 points.

Perez, a senior at Cathedral High in Los Angeles, prevailed in the Division 3-4-5 boys individual Sweepstakes in 14:38, the third-fastest Friday performance in meet history.

Perez lowered his Mt. SAC personal-best effort by 12 seconds, continuing his march toward a potential attack on the all-time mark of 14:23 achieved in 2014 by Austin Tamagno of Brea-Olinda when he returns to compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 prelims and finals in November at Mt. SAC.

Matthew Galindo of Savanna was second in 14:58, University City’s Caden Hicks took third in 15:00, Convent and Stuart Hall’s Malcolm Oakes placed fourth in 15:02, Cathedral’s Emmanuel Hernandez finished fifth in 15:10, with Sacramento Country Day’s Andrew Burr securing sixth in 15:13.

Harvard-Westlake held off Cathedral by a 114-129 margin, with Burroughs Ridgecrest taking third at 137 points.

Parcells, a senior at Rim of the World, pulled away from the field in the final mile of the Division 3-4-5 boys team Sweepstakes race and triumphed in 14:53, an 11-second improvement from last year’s runner-up effort in the Division 3-4-5 individual Sweepstakes competition.

Despite Santa Margarita having Zachary Gibson finish second in 15:09 and Parker Herbert place fourth in 15:17, the Eagles secured second as a team by a 74-144 margin behind St. Francis.

The Golden Knights had Luke Metcalf take fifth in 15:22 and Samuel Franco earn seventh in 15:29 to capture the team Sweepstakes crown. Aiden Aldana of St. John Bosco was third in 15:12.

Oak Park took third with 162 points and Palos Verdes finished fourth at 195 points.
